Stam is a Path Planning and Machine Learning engineer from Athens, Greece, who joined Third Insight back in January 2020. He loves solving hard problems and applying math to extend the capabilities and skills of our robotic fleet. He has developed and is managing the full navigation pipelines of our Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). This includes but is not limited to trajectory generation, obstacle and collision avoidance, real time scene capturing and mapping and many more. He is also working on the computer vision pipelines and of course the core thesis of the company which is to develop an Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a thinking machine which can operate alongside humans to facilitate their life and enrich their skillset.
Stam graduated with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 2018, specialising in robotics and controls. His research was focused in bioinspired quadruped robot locomotion and controls. During his thesis, he developed a real time, fully decentralised control architecture for Laelaps II, a four-legged robot, which enabled it to perform different moving gaits.
Thereafter, he moved to Pittsburgh, United States, to attend Carnegie Mellon University where he received his second master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering focusing in Robotics, Path Planning and Machine Learning. His research was primarily focused on image to action based Deep Reinforcement Learning in discrete spaces. In July 2019, he presented his work “Deep Q Reinforcement Learning for Autonomous Navigation of Surgical Snake Robots in Confined Spaces” at the Hamlyn Symposium in London, United Kingdom.
